When the skin becomes stretched over an extended period of time, such as during weight gain or pregnancy, it may lose its ability to contract back to its original firmness upon returning to a smaller size. This loss of skin elasticity can leave behind areas of loose hanging skin that can make it difficult to feel comfortable with one’s appearance. During the consultation, Dr. Dugan will determine if the tummy tuck will require tightening of the underlying abdominal muscles or only removal of excess skin. The procedure is performed under IV sedation along with tumescent anesthesia. In some cases, a tummy tuck may also be paired with liposuction in order to address stubborn fat in the abdominal region and to allow for a nicer contour. A horizontal incision is made, at a width sufficient to remove the appropriate amount of loose skin, and the excess skin and fat are removed. If needed, the abdominal wall muscles will be tightened. The patient will be required to wear a compression garment for 4 weeks to help establish the connection between the repositioned abdominal skin and the underlying muscles. The compression garments can be worn under any clothing and are quite comfortable. Patients may return to work with light duty in 2-3 weeks. Activities that involve contraction of the abdominal muscles or contact sports are not recommended during the recovery period. More strenuous activities can be performed 4-6 weeks after surgery. The final appearance is expected to be seen three months after surgery.
